I'd rather have them say we have a strange relationship than act like we don't have one at all. They think you're so yielding because you don't care, so I gave them a different way to look at it.
[ The way she was taught to be a 'good wife' doesn't suit this place. Of course that makes his part in it more significant; he knows perfectly well how things look but made a dramatic, fraught gesture late instead of telling her all this weeks ago. ]
